Kevin Brouder at the double

Kevin Brouder stole the show at Sligo on Thursday as the jockey registered a first double thanks to Cock A Doodle Doo and Like A Diamond.

The former did the business in the Clayton Hotel Mares Maiden Hurdle – but it was a closely-run thing.

James Nash’s mare (14-1) veered right on the run-in but still held on by a diminishing short head from So Lonely.

Brouder said: “I thought I’d held on and she galloped out real well to the line.

“She winged the last, which was good, and she still had a little bit up her sleeve.

“She’s the type that’d only do what she has to.

“The second mare has good form so hopefully it’s onward and upwards for my one.”

Brouder completed his brace in division one of the Driftwood Restaurant Rosses Point Handicap Hurdle in which Like A Diamond (9-2) defeated Neddyvaughan by a length and three-quarters.

Like A Diamond won at Sligo last month and was providing Co Kerry trainer Ian O’Connor with a second success.

Listowel native Brouder said: “That’s Ian’s second winner now and he puts in some time with the horses.

“They get beach work, he has his own gallop, too, and he keeps chopping and changing things with them, including hacking up around the mountains.

“If you look at this horse’s form early on – it was in and out – he probably wasn’t happy but Ian has sweetened him up.

“He does different things every day with him – taking him away in the box – and it shows.

“He has four horses in training and he puts serious time into them so he deserves the success and there should be more to come.”
