Carlingford Lough returns to action at Listowel

Carlingford Lough has his sights lowered in the Southampton Goodwill Plate Chase at Listowel on Friday.

The 12-year-old has been a magnificent servant to trainer John Kiely and owner JP McManus, winning five Grade Ones including back-to-back renewals of the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in 2015 and 2016.

It is fair to say the veteran is not the force he once was, but this two-and-a-half-mile conditions chase appears his easiest assignment for a while, on paper at least.

Carlingford Lough faces five rivals on his first start since being pulled up in the Grand National at Aintree in April and while John Ryan’s Kylecrue looks to have his work cut out, the other quintet are closely matched on ratings.

The McManus silks are also carried by the Jessica Harrington-trained Don’t Touch It, while Henry de Bromhead’s Alisier D’Irlande heads the field.

Andrew McNamara’s Val De Ferbet and Willie Mullins’ high-class mare Listen Dear are the other contenders.

Cappacon bids to complete a hat-trick in the Paud, Sarah & Mary Fitzmaurice Memorial Handicap Hurdle.

Oliver McKiernan’s charge won at Sligo last month and Wexford last week and must have every chance of going in again in the hands of 5lb claimer Barry Browne.

Dorrells Pierji is likely to be a warm order for the Mullins yard in the John J. Galvin Maiden Hurdle.

The five-year-old struck twice in the bumper sphere at Wexford and Galway and already has jumping experience having won a point-to-point.

His biggest threat could be stablemate Getoutameway, who was last seen chasing home another Mullins runner, Masons Daughter, at Tipperary in May.

The most valuable Flat race of the afternoon is the opening Foran Equine Irish EBF Auction Fillies Maiden.

The 79-rated Engles Rock sets a decent standard, but perhaps more interesting is Dermot Weld’s Munees Gemini, who found only the exciting Goddess too strong on debut.
